Can Acupuncture Help You Lose Weight?

Do you struggle to keep your weight under control? Have you tried every fad diet out there but you just can’t lose those extra few pounds? If so, you may be surprised to learn that acupuncture can help you achieve your weight-loss goals.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese practice involving the use of fine needles on strategic points along the skin. These points, or channels, are called meridians, and they facilitate the flow of energy, or qi, within the body. Acupuncturists believe that weight problems could be due to blockages in this energy flow. Once the needles are inserted into these channels, the flow can resume its natural course. Your body can then return to a greater state of homeostasis, resulting in better hormonal balance, better digestion, and fewer cravings.

Before inserting any needles, your acupuncturist will start by taking a health history and performing an examination to uncover the main cause of your weight gain. This will help determine where to place the needles. In the case of weight issues, needles are generally placed in four specific acupuncture points in the ear. This stimulates the hypothalamus in the brain and triggers the release of neurochemicals and hormones that can help regulate your weight.

The needles, which are generally painless, will remain in place for about 30 to 45 minutes. Afterwards, they may be replaced with “ear tacks” or “ear seeds,” which you will wear home with you. Whenever you experience hard-to-control cravings or hunger in days that follow, apply gentle pressure to the ear seeds. This will cause a mild release of endorphins and relaxing sensations that can help quell your cravings.

Your treatment plan will vary depending on how much weight you wish to lose, how quickly you want to lose it, and how committed you are to sticking with a longer-term plan. For someone seeking to lose 5 or 10 pounds, one treatment every 3 days, or twice a week, is recommended. Once your desired results are achieved, you can return once every two weeks.

Of course, acupuncture can only do so much to control your weight. Eating a healthy diet and trying to exercise will greatly impact your results. But if you’re feeling stuck on your path to better health, a few acupuncture needles might be all it takes to get your energy and vitality flowing again.
