Appearing on a CNN panel before taking a job at the Department of Justice as then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions' chief of staff, Whitaker said, "I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced with a recess appointment and that attorney general doesn't fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to a halt".

They are calling for a "rapid response" to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the investigation.

Kreutz said the appointment of Whitaker, whom the AP called "a Republican Party loyalist", eventually could end the probe by cutting funding. Also, some of the leads developed by Mueller already have been turned over to other Justice Department units, including the US attorney in Manhattan. "I don't know Matt Whitaker", said Mr. Trump, who promoted Mr. Whitaker Wednesday after firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

This protest was part of a large group of events that happened worldwide, organized by Move On, a left-wing group that describes itself as "a force for social justice and political progress".

It was Clovis, no stranger to TV and radio himself, who encouraged Whitaker to get a regular commentary gig on cable television to get President Donald Trump's attention, according to friends who Whitaker told at the time.

About 6pm , Victoria Police Superintendent David Clayton holds a press conference just metres from where the incident unfolded. Later in the evening, witnesses were being taken to Melbourne West police station in police vans, some looking quite shaken.

That left Rosenstein overseeing the investigation, and he named Mueller as special counsel.

Despite demands from Democrats and ethics watchdogs that he recuse because of his past comments, Whitaker showed no signs Thursday that he meant to do so. Four former Trump campaign officials - including his onetime national security adviser Michael Flynn and campaign chairman Paul Manafort - are among those who have pleaded guilty.

Trump's running commentary criticizing Sessions and the Justice Department injected more turmoil into an agency that was still reeling from the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

The protesters gathered earlier in the evening at Cal Anderson Park to hear speeches by Gov. Jay Inslee, U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, and King County Executive Dow Constantine before marching to the Jackson Federal Building.

After recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, the staunchly conservative Sessions spent his time ramping up efforts to combat violent gangs, drug use and illegal immigration - all key components of Trump's law-and-order agenda.

Other witnesses described people using bar stools to break windows and escape. "I just started hearing these big pops. Ms Whittler said she didn't have time "to think about why this is happening", and just focused on a way to "get out".
