He also affirmed that this was a planned move by the employees across offices globally.

Organizers say they expect more than a thousand employees will walk out of Google offices worldwide at 11:10 a.m. local time on Thursday.

Mike Clancy, general secretary of tech workers" union Prospect, said: "Sexual harassment is a serious problem in too many work places, including in the tech sector. Why do they think it's OK to reward perpetrators & further violate victims? He said those who participated in the walkout would not be penalized and noted that many senior leaders from the company took part.

The first walkout happened in Singapore, and then swept around the globe all the way to Google's headquarters in California.

The organisers behind the protest said that almost 17,000 Google employees took part in the walkout, and they aren't done counting yet.

According to reports, the so-called "Google walkout" comes after a New York Times investigation revealed years of sexual harassment and other misconduct allegations.

Yesterday, employees posted on social media about the walkout and were set to deliver speeches in public plazas.

The report said Rubin received a United States dollars 90 million severance package in 2014 even though Google concluded the sexual misconduct allegations against him were credible.

The email did not mention the reported incidents involving Mr Rubin, Mr DeVaul or anyone else, but Mr Pichai did not dispute anything in the NYT story.

Android creator Andy Rubin left Google in 2014 with a $90million (£70million) golden parachute.

Sam Singer, a spokesman for Rubin, rejected the allegations against him in a statement to AFP, saying Rubin left Google of his own accord.

They are now calling on Google to make five key chances. These included Richard DeVaul, a director at the Google-affiliated lab that created far-flung projects such as self-driving cars and internet-beaming balloons. The Times report claimed he had sexually harassed a job applicant. The tech giant told the NYT that it had fired 48 people for sexual harassment since 2016, and none of them had been given an exit package.
