In a historic result on couple of seats in the US midterm polls, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar have become the first Muslim women elected to US Congress.

"I did not expect to come to the United States and go to school with kids who were anxious about food as much as I was anxious about it in a refugee camp", Omar said in an interview last month.

Omar said President Trump's "politics of fear" motivated her to get in the race.

Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee, won a House seat in a heavily-Democratic district in the Midwestern state of Minnesota, where she will succeed Keith Ellison, himself the first Muslim elected to Congress.

And regardless of who wins in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber. After the start of the civil war in 1991, she and her family fled Somalia and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya.

She chose to run for Congress after Ellison, who is also black, made a decision to give up his seat after 12 years in Congress to run for attorney general of Minnesota.

Born in Detroit to Palestinian-American parents, Tlaib served in Michigan's state legislature from 2008 to 2014. This seat has been held by Democrats since 1963.

She is not only the second Muslim women elected in Congress but also the first Somali-American. Tlaib ran unopposed, but fended off a late write-in challenge from the woman she defeated in the primaries.

Tlaib has advocated for universal health care, a $15 national minimum wage, union protections, and tuition-free college education.
