Mandatory evacuations ordered due to Woolsey Fire

It's one of two wildfires burning in the region. By Thursday evening, it had scorched up to 7,000 acres and sent residents of more than 1,200 homes fleeing, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Just after 5 a.m., the blaze jumped the southside of the 101 Freeway into the Calabasas area. When those evacuations come, you have to go.

That fire - which ignited in Woolsey Canyon east of Simi Valley on Thursday - was burning toward Malibu on Friday.

Several structures have been destroyed, thousands of homes are threatened and the entire City of Malibu was under mandatory evacuation orders as the Woolsey Fire burned for its second day Friday.

The fire had crossed U.S. 101 a few miles east of Thousand Oaks - the site of Wednesday night's bar shooting massacre - and was headed south to the Pacific coast, in the direction of Malibu Creek State Park, the city of Malibu and Pepperdine University, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The Thousand Oaks-area Conejo Valley Unified School District also has closed all its schools.

One fire that broke out near the northeast corner of Los Angeles has roared westward, jumped USA 101 in the Calabasas area and is surging up the Santa Monica Mountains. That includes areas of Agoura Hills, Calabasas and Westlake Village, all in L.A. County. Hundreds of firefighters are still struggling to contain it.

"They will continue to save homes and do whatever they can until the work is done", L.A. County Fire Dept. Battalion Chief Trey Espy told CBS2.

Thirty-thousand people have been evacuated so far and the number of evacuees is expected to rise as embers push ahead of the fire. Almost 2,300 firefighters are battling the flames, but as of Friday morning, it was still zero percent contained.
