Delhi's Air Quality On The Brink Of Turning'Severe, Say Authorities

Environment ministry forms teams to report incidents of pollution

According to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), air-quality across the National Capital Region (NCR) remained "very poor" on Monday.

Officials attributed the sudden deterioration to a change in wind direction, now blowing from the northwestern region towards Delhi, bringing with it dust and smoke from stubble burning in neighbouring states.

With negligible wind over Delhi, pollutants were trapped due to rise in humidity early on Thursday when the air quality was put as "very poor".

D Saha, former additional director and head of air quality management division at the CPCB, said, "No drastic change in pollution level is anticipated as the ground level emissions are under control due to various administrative and regulatory measures, and we are likely to have a clean Diwali". It also comes as a relief after the air quality recorded a "severe" pollution levels with AQI of 410 just three days ago.

The teams are visiting different parts of Delhi and adjacent towns of Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Noida.

An aggressive 10-day-long "Clean Air Campaign" from November 1-10 has also been launched to monitor and report polluting activities as well as to ensure quick action. The Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) has also urged the people of Delhi to use public transport in the 1st 10 days of November to check the pollution level in the city.
