The initiative comes as public pressure mounts on manufacturers and retailers to pare down the deluge of plastic packaging that is clogging landfills and choking the seas

Over 290 organisations signed 'The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, ' led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with UN Environment, on Monday.

Well-known consumer goods businesses from around the globe have signed The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment in Bali at the Our Ocean Conference.

The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment has been created to unite businesses, governments, and other organizations behind a common vision.

The foundation said the signers of the pact represent 20 percent of plastic packaging produced globally. "We need to move upstream to the source of the flow", said Ellen MacArthur, the record-breaking British sailor who is behind the plastic initiative. Targets will be reviewed every 18 months, and become increasingly ambitious over the coming years.
