Trump told a political rally in Montana on Thursday night that he wanted "to thank the Mexican government because they are stopping it hopefully before it ever gets to Mexico".

On Thursday, the Mexican government asked the United Nations Refugee Agency for help in assisting migrants filing for refugee protection at the border, as Mr. Trump threatened to deploy the usa military and close the southern US border with Mexico if it doesn't stop what he described as an "onslaught" of migrants.

Tensions rose Thursday when an immigration activist who led a migrant caravan through Mexico last spring was arrested by federal police and immigration agents in Ciudad Hidalgo on the Mexican side of the border.

Keilin Umana, a pregnant nurse who told the Associated Press that she had fled her home after receiving death threats from gang members, said: "We are not criminals, we are migrants".

Yesterday, black airplanes carrying several hundred Mexican federal police armed with riot gear arrived at the Mexico-Guatemala border.

Earlier in the week, the USA president had threatened to cut aid to Honduras and send U.S. troops to the Mexican border.

He met with Guatemalan President Juan Carlos Varela and Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado.

"We have been here since 4 a.m.", said Veliz. The UNHCR will provide help evaluating the asylum claims of the migrants before they cross into the U.S.

Recent U.S. efforts to curb immigration have come as record numbers of families have sought to enter the United States, although the overall number of people crossing the border is much lower than in previous years.

Illegal immigration is likely to be a top issue in November 6 US congressional elections and Trump said migrants in the caravan were being used by his political opponents.

Vaughan also pointed out that Guatemala has already caved into the caravan, but she is encouraged that Mexico has deployed officers to its southern border. Trump has threatened to withdraw some of the region's $2.6 billion in foreign aid if the migrants are let through. "He's making a political calculation".
