"It's a typical mistake made by an empire", Putin said.

Russian Federation is a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has long sought to characterise his brutal crackdown on opposition groups as a fight against jihadists.

The leader said the situation in Syria remains hard, especially in the east of Euphrates, where US and European Union citizens were among 700 people taken hostage by Daesh.

The Islamist terrorists have already murdered a number of hostages and warned that they will perform daily executions, the Russian president has said.

The Turkey-Russia deal reached last month calls for the removal of all members of Syrian radical groups and heavy weapons from the 15-20-kilometer (9-12 mile) deep demilitarized zone in Idlib.

"I want to thank our Turkish partners, we see that they work, they are fulfilling the obligations".

Putin said Trump aims at "some sort of stabilization and improvement of U.S".

The Russian leader pointed at political infighting between the Democrats and the Republicans, saying it blocked any possible effort by Trump to fix the fractured ties with Russia. He said he and Trump had a good discussion despite policy differences. But, Putin declared, Russian Federation will never be the first to use nukes, saying, "We have no concept of preemptive strike" (though RT explains why there may be a loophole to that).

Putin said Thursday Russia's military doctrine doesn't envisage a preventative nuclear strike.

He said Russian Federation would not be the first to initiate an attack but only use its nuclear weapons in retaliatory missile attacks if early warning systems spotted missiles heading toward the country.

"The aggressor will have to understand that retaliation is inevitable, that it will be destroyed and that we, as victims of aggression, as martyrs, will go to heaven".
