PS4 users warned to set messages to private after receiving message that bricks their console

New PlayStation 4 Bug Reportedly Breaking Consoles

An exploit using the messages system on PlayStation 4 is reportedly causing some consoles to have to factory reset, if the spam message is opened.

Users have discussed the issue on the r/PS4 Reddit board, where they say they are receiving messages to their consoles through the console's messaging application, Kotaku reported.

Someone who wants to brick your console simply sends you a message that your PS4 can't read or recognise, and it crashes the system. In a post titled "WARNING: Set your messages to private", user Huntstark1 describes a scenario where nearly their whole team got booted out of a Rainbow Six: Siege match after they all received a message containing an unrecognized character. A player from the other team used a dummy account to send the message and crashed my entire team.

Before we go any further: To set you PlayStation account to private, fire up your console and head to the Settings menu. Messaging, and set Messages to either Friends (if you trust them) or No One.

Sony hasn't offered any guidance or responded to Mashable's request for comment, but a couple of crowdsourced fixes have surfaced.
