Mysterious rectangular iceberg found by NASA

We tend to think of icebergs as jagged and pointy, with the bulk beneath the surface, and with a penchant for ruining DiCaprio romances.

NASA has shared a photo of a rectangular iceberg floating in the Weddell Sea off Antarctica, its flat top and straight edges appearing so exact as to suggest Mother Nature used a saw, per CTV News.

Images of the unusual icebergs were captured on NASA's IceBridge flight, an airborne survey of Arctic and Antarctic ice yielding detailed, three-dimensional views of ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice.

It even has a name: A tabular iceberg, a type of iceberg both broad and flat.

Turkey to reveal details of probe into Khashoggi's killing
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Sunday he will reveal full details on Tuesday about the killing of Jamal Khashoggi . Trump initially said he believed the Saudi account, but has now said he still does not know where Khashoggi's body is.

Operation IceBridge refers to the formation as a tabular iceberg and says it was found floating in the sea ice just off the Larsen C ice shelf in the Antarctic.

"We get two types of icebergs: We get the type that everyone can envision in their head that sank the Titanic, and they look like prisms or triangles at the surface and you know they have a insane subsurface", Kelly Brunt, an ice scientist with NASA, told Live Science.

Floating off the coast of Antarctica is an iceberg, but not any normal iceberg you've ever seen. Such non-conventional icebergs can be massive, with the record-setting 11,000 square kilometer Iceberg B-15, visible from space, spotted off the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 2000.

PM's apology to victims of abuse welcomed by Church in Australia
For too many years governments and institutions refused to acknowledge the darkness that lay within our community. The child abuse royal commission heard from 17,000 survivors and made 122 recommendations to the government.

"We get two types of icebergs: We get the type that everyone can envision in their head that sank the Titanic, and they look like prisms or triangles at the surface and you know they have a insane subsurface", Brunt said.

Others simply posted photos of other majestic tabular icebergs.

Tabular icebergs form, Brunt told LiveScience, through a process that's a bit like a fingernail growing too long and cracking off at the end.

"The best thing I can say is that when a "trillion tonne" iceberg runs into an ice-covered rocky island (Bawden Ice Rise) the crystalline glacier ice will fracture along planes of weakness, much like a more typical mineral crystal might be cleaved".

Mercury Mission Will Map Morphology and Measure Magnetics
More than 30 years later, NASA launched Messenger , the first spacecraft to successfully orbit and map Mercury's surface. The BepiColombo spacecraft has blasted off on a journey to unravel the mysteries of the solar system's innermost planet.
