Earlier in the day, a bomb was discovered at 2016 United States presidential candidate and prominent Democratic party leader Hillary Clinton's resident in Chappaqua, New York.

A US official told the Associated Press that these devices may be linked to the one found Monday at the home of liberal billionaire George Soros.

Law enforcement officials believe that the aforementioned devices were similar to that sent to the NY home of billionaire investor and philanthropist, George Soros. The one intended for Mr. Obama was caught early Wednesday morning in Washington, D.C.

The packages were immediately identified during a routine mail screening as potential explosive devices and there was no risk of Clinton or Obama receiving the packages, Secret Service said in a statement.

Hillary Clinton was campaigning for Democrats in Florida and wasn't at the family's suburban NY residence when a suspicious package addressed to her was seized by the Secret Service.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the packages and is taking the situation "extremely seriously", a senior White House official told NBC News.

The devices, which officials said shared a similar design, were aimed at prominent Democrats and a cable news network often criticized by political conservatives. "A device has been sent to my office in Manhattan, which we were just informed about".
