So far, few franchises, if any, are engaged in serious conversations with the Timberwolves on Butler, sources said.

On Friday, ESPN's Zach Lowe ran a piece of his own in which he predicted that the Rockets would certainly get involved in the sweepstakes.

Apparently, Glen Taylor's word - and the hastiness with which he appears to moving - that Butler would be traded as soon as possible was enough. "But the Heat knows a different combination of more attractive players will be needed to pry away Butler, who averaged 22.2 points per game for Minnesota last season".

Though no specifics of a potential deal between Cleveland and Minnesota have been mentioned, if the Cavaliers would be willing to also take center Gorgui Dieng, who is owed $48.5 million over the next three seasons, as part of a potential swap it could be a deal sweetener. As much as the Lakers would surely love to pair LeBron James with a co-star, they couldn't trade for Butler without including Lonzo Ball or Brandon Ingram. He can sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a new team. None of those apply for Butler's current team. The Nets and Clippers will both have room for two max contracts next offseason.

With Butler set to hit free agency next summer, Minnesota was always likely to choose Towns and commit to him for the foreseeable future.
