United States to admit 310,000 refugees, asylum seekers in 2019

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the country proposed resettling up to 30,000 refugees under the new refugee ceiling as well as processing more than 280,000 asylum seekers.

That, too, was down dramatically; the administration of President Barack Obama set a cap of 110,000 for the 2017 fiscal year, only part of which saw Obama as president.

The fact that the U.S. will cap the annual number of refugees admitted here at 30,000 - by far the lowest ceiling in four decades - demonstrates an utter lack of compassion for the victims of armed violence and persecution.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced "the new refugee ceiling", adding the U.S. would also process more than 280,000 asylum seekers in 2019.

May acknowledges no-deal Brexit would cause some 'disruption'
The news comes as ministers released a raft of documents revealing the effects Brexit could have on ordinary people if no deal is struck.

"Decisions on which refugees will be resettled and where they go are made exclusively by the governments of countries that, like the United States, admit refugees for resettlement", UNHCR spokesman William Spindler told a regular U.N. briefing in Geneva.

Pompeo said they would join the over 800,000 asylum seekers already inside the United States and who are awaiting adjudication of their claims.

"The improved refugee policy of this administration serves the national interest of the United States, and expands our ability to help those in need all around the world", according to a statement by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Refugee resettlement to the US from countries with known Islamic terrorist problems has greatly dropped, according to Reuters.

"The US is not only abdicating humanitarian leadership and responsibility-sharing in response to the worst global displacement and refugee crisis since the Second World War, but compromising critical strategic interests and reneging on commitments to allies and vulnerable populations", Miliband said.

Trump lowered that to 45,000. At this same time during 2016, under Obama, about 8,300 Somali refugees had been allowed to resettle across the country. More than 5 million Syrian refugees live in other countries in the Middle East, such as Lebanon and Turkey, while the USA admitted only 60 Syrian refugees in the 2018 fiscal year.

Officials say refugee settlement in the United States is very expensive.

While Pompeo said the US remains the most generous nation to refugees, the proposal was met with swift outrage from refugee resettlement agencies and human rights groups like Church World Service and Refugees International, calling it "appalling", "an affront to American communities", and "a shameful abdication of our humanity in the face of the worst refugee crisis in history". Of the 3 million refugees admitted to the USsince 1975, not one has been arrested for carrying out a lethal terror attack on United States soil, according to resettlement agencies. Since 1980, the yearly refugee goal has averaged 95,000 persons.
