US President Donald Trump on Monday branded sexual assault allegations that threaten to bring down his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh "totally political", hardening his position ahead of an explosive Senate showdown.

Kavanaugh's confirmation as a Supreme Court Judge now hinges on the much-anticipated hearing.

A New Yorker story on Sunday described an investigation by Senate Democrats into whether Kavanaugh exposed himself to, and assaulted, a woman in college on Sunday. Senate Republicans should stand up to these unsubstantiated and discredited allegations and move forward with a vote to confirm Kavanaugh.

She admitted to being intoxicated during the alleged incident, and was at first tired of coming forward because of gaps in her memory.

"Despite actual threats to her safety and her life, Dr. Ford believes it is important for senators to hear directly from her about the sexual assault committed against her", the lawyers said in a statement.

Republicans, with a 51-49 Senate majority, can confirm Kavanaugh if they stay united.

Porsche drops diesel in electric car push
In 2017, just 12 per cent of Porsches sold worldwide were fitted with a diesel engine. "This was about nitrogen oxide, not CO2". Porsche has sold diesel versions of its cars for almost a decade.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican, had set several deadlines since Friday for Ford to decide whether and how she would testify before the panel.

Kavanaugh could try to indirectly address the Ramirez allegation in the Ford hearing by answering questions about his partying habits and sexual proclivities in a way that gets across he didn't expose himself to Ford. Avenatti told The Associated Press that he will disclose his client's identity in the coming days and that she is prepared to testify before the committee, as well as provide names of corroborating witnesses.

But Farrow pushed back against a New York Times report that cast doubt on Ramirez's story. "This is a smear, plain and simple", Kavanaugh said in a statement issued through the White House.

Blasey and Kavanaugh are scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee about Blasey's accusations on Thursday.

Professor Christine Blasey Ford, who came forward last week, has agreed to be questioned publicly at a committee hearing on Thursday.

Bill Cosby faces sentencing over sex assault
Defense attorneys would be allowed to cross-examine witnesses, said Kate Delano, spokeswoman for the county prosecutor's officer. According to NBC News , "Cosby's lawyers opposed the request for additional accusers to testify at the sentencing hearing".

However, one former classmate remembered hearing about the incident from another, and independently corroborated numerous details offered by Ms Ramirez.

"This alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen". So far, no Republican senators have said they would vote against Kavanaugh.

Speaking at the United Nations in NY on Monday, Mr Trump said Brett Kavanaugh is "outstanding", adding: "I am with him all the way".

A White House spokeswoman added in a second statement that the allegation was "designed to tear down a good man".

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the committee, sent a letter to committee chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, Sunday evening asking that all proceedings related to Kavanaugh's nomination be suspended. A handful of senators in both parties remain undecided on his nomination. This will occur as a continuation of the hearing to consider Justice Kavanaugh's nomination to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the US.

The White House put out a news release Sunday night to rebut the accusations in the article, focusing on such things as the reported gaps in Ramirez's memory and the statements from those who knew Kavanaugh saying they had never heard of the alleged incident.
