Google to power Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance infotainment systems

While many volume carmakers offer infotainment "mirroring" to pair with Apple iPhones or Android smartphones, premium rivals such as BMW and Daimler's Mercedes are investing heavily in their own operating systems, vocal assistants, and connected services.

Google will integrate its Android operating system into cars produced by Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, a move that will put its tech products within easy reach of millions of drivers.

The alliance, which previous year sold a combined 10.6 million vehicles globally, will debut the new system in 2021, giving drivers better integration of Google's maps, app store and voice-activated assistant from the vehicle's dashboard, the companies said.

Alliance Intelligent Cloud will provide next-gen infotainment systems with secure connectivity and will facilitate over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics. Hadi Zablit, Senior VP of Business Development at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi said in a statement. The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has sold 5.5 mn vehicles in the first half of the year which is more than Volkswagen and Toyota Motor.
