Following a statewide emergency declaration, Athens area hospitals and emergency service agencies on Wednesday prepared for what could be the most catastrophic hurricane to hit the mid-Atlantic coast in decades.

Crews are coming in from all over the region to assist with the expected power outages.

A steady stream of vehicles full of people and belongings flowed inland Tuesday, and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tried to convince everyone to flee.

Weekend sporting events have already been canceled, with possibly more to come.

The National Hurricane Center projects rainfall anywhere from 5 to 20 inches across SC. It's estimated that 1 million people will be impacted by Florence's arrival.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for north of Duck, NC, to the North Carolina/Virginia border.

It was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane before coming ashore near Wrightsville Beach close to Wilmington, North Carolina. In South Carolina , a 62-year-old woman died when her vehicle hit a tree that had fallen across a road in the town of Union.

Old Dominion's football game at Charlotte (North Carolina) has been moved up to Thursday because of Hurricane Florence. Trump, who plans a visit to the region next week, tweeted his "deepest sympathies and warmth" to the families and friends of those who had lost their lives.

Hurricane Florence is still well off the coast of the United States, approximately 435 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, and is moving northwest at 16 mph.

As it nears the coast, the storm's forward motion will slow to a crawl, but the winds and rain will continue full-strength.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster on Monday ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents.

For anyone needing a place to stay to escape the hurricane, both North Carolina and SC are updating their lists of emergency shelters.

"The worst is yet to come", he added.

Florence is predicted to make an overnight landfall Friday west of Wilmington, NC. On Saturday, its streets were strewn with downed tree limbs and carpeted with leaves and other debris.

A network of rivers and streams that extend inland from the coast could also carry the surge far inland, said Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at Colorado State University's department of atmospheric sciences.

Officials had warned before the storm that the rains could risk tainting waterways with murky coal ash and toxic hog waste.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm. "Don't plan to leave once the winds and rains start".
