Jamie Dimon threw down the gauntlet on Wednesday, issuing a series of bellicose comments - at least politically speaking - directed squarely at US President Donald Trump.

"I've made a lot of bankers, and others, look much smarter than they are with my great economic policy!"

Dimon added that he earned his wealth as opposed to Trump, who, as Dimon put it, inherited his as "a gift from daddy".

By noon, the bank sent out a statement from its chairman and chief executive officer backtracking completely: "I should not have said it".

The confidence marks a sharp turn for Dimon, who, when asked about his political potential before the rise of the Trump administration, doubted he'd ever win election as a wealthy New Yorker.
