Canelo vs. Golovkin 2 - "The REMATCH"

Gennady Golovkin punching Canelo Alvarez

GETTY Gennady Golovkin will face Canelo Alvarez in a rematch on September 15

Barring any "backroom politics", the rematch set for this Saturday (September 16th) is being billed as more than a unification fight for all the Middleweight straps, but as the deciding vote in choosing the number one spot on the Pound for Pound list, regardless of division.

Golovkin beat Vanes Martirosyan as a replacement opponent on May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena.

So what were boxing fans saying about the weigh-in?

The fight last fall ended in a swirl of controversy after judge Dave Moretti scored it 115-113 for Golovkin; while Don Trella saw it a 114-114 and Adelaide Byrd favored Alvarez 118-110. They do so Saturday night on the Las Vegas Strip not as the gentleman fighters they portrayed themselves to be then, but as bitter rivals who legitimately seem to dislike each other.

Due to the mixed scorecards, "Canelo vs. GGG 1" was ruled a split-draw. After failing two drug tests in February for clenbuterol and pushing the date from May 5 to September 15, Golovkin and his team have labeled Alvarez as a "cheater" - even though the latter has said on numerous occasions that contaminated meat caused the positive results.

Asked whether Canelo should be allowed to fight at all, Golovkin replied: "I'm a fighter, not a commissioner".

The 28-year-old vehemently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining he had ingested the drug accidentally as a result of eating contaminated beef from his native Mexico. "It's a little bit different this time, but I believe it will be a big fight for the fans".

But the consequences of Canelo's failed drugs test were enormous for Golovkin, too.

"Everywhere, biceps, stomach, pretty much all over his body you could see injection marks".

The highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez 49-1-2 (34 KOs) and Gennady "GGG" Golovkin 38-0-1 (34 KOs) will take place live from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
