With gun salutes, Pakistan marks 71 years of independence

The incoming leadership of Pakistan led by former cricketer Imran Khan will give priority to peace between Islamabad and its neighbours, High Commissioner of Pakistan Sohail Mahmood said while celebrating the country's Independence Day on Tuesday.

The national anthem was played during the flag hoisting ceremony and all the guests and children from various schools sang the anthem.

People across the country flocked to stalls that lined up streets to purchase national flags in different sizes, t-shirts, badges and other merchandise to display their national pride.

In his address to the ceremony at the Convention Centre, President Mamnoon congratulated the nation on what he said was the "day of true celebration".

The ceremonies for transfer of power took place on August 14, 1947, for Pakistan and August 15, 1947, for India.

At the Pakistan Embassy in Riyadh hundreds of Pakistani expatriates watched as Pakistan's Ambassador, Khan Hasham Bin Saddique, hoisted the national flag.

He said Pakistan had to confront numerous challenges since its creation and that we haven't completely reached our destination yet.

"This day reminds us that the fate of the country is to be decided through ballot", Mr Hussain said.

"Pakistan will continue to provide its political and moral support to resolve the Kashmir issue under United Nations resolutions", Mamnoon said.
