Church report: 1,000 child victims in Pennsylvania

The Vatican has expressed "shame and sorrow" over the grand jury report into widespread sex abuse in Pennsylvania. Some Catholics anxious that the Pope's ability to serve as a moral witness for the world could be compromised should he fail to act decisively.

"The problem of sexual misconduct in the church is a universal problem", Secillano said.

Tim Lennon, national president of the nonprofit group Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), said the grand jury's findings are "sad and tragic".

Pope Francis accepted McCarrick's resignation in July after American church officials said allegations that he sexually abused a 16-year-old boy nearly 50 years ago were credible and substantiated. Pope Francis has yet to comment directly.

Chaput's archdiocese was not covered by the Tuesday report, although a 2005 grand jury report found evidence that hundreds of children had been sexually abused by at least 63 priests in the district. "It makes the world safer for other children going forward".

The diocese says all the allegations are from many years ago.

He said Catholics need to help victims and he asked for Mary's intervention for those whose confidence is shaken because of the "terrible plague" of abuse.

A former Pennsylvania prosecutor has been fired from his job as an attorney for a county youth services office after a report showed that as prosecutor, he stopped an investigation into alleged child abuse by a priest to gain political favor from the Pittsburgh Diocese.

In a statement, Vatican spokesman Greg Burke also said the Catholic Church "must learn hard lessons from its past", and that the Vatican vowed to hold abusers and enablers accountable.

Since Tuesday afternoon, after a grand jury report was released detailing the abuse allegations, Shapiro said Wednesday that more than 150 calls and e-mails poured in.

"Victims should know that the Pope is on their side", the Vatican said in the statement.

By church law, only the Pope can discipline or remove bishops.

McCarrick, who recently resigned from the church's College of Cardinals, has been accused of molesting young boys and seminarians - accusations he denies.

Also of note: "It's possible that the "real number" of abused children could be "in the thousands" due to missing records or other victims who feared speaking about the allegations, according to the grand jury's report", as Fox News noted about this very, very troubling case. "Our structures must preclude bishops from deterring complaints against them, from hampering their investigation, or from skewing their resolution".

The Diocese of Erie followed suit by adding five new names to their publicized list of clergy as well as lay men and women. Previous efforts to eliminate the statute of limitations in Pennsylvania - some of which have been led by lawmakers who survived church abuse - have caused controversy and have been unsuccessful in the past. This is a moral catastrophe.
