Tsunami possible after 7.0 quake hits Indonesia

Tsunami warning issued after magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocks Indonesia, tourist hotspot Bali

The U.S. Geological Survey said the natural disaster, initially listed as a 7.0 magnitude but later downgraded to 6.9, was reported around 7:46 a.m. ET off Lombok Island, east of Bali.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, off the north coast of the island, struck 10km (6.21 miles) underground.

A tsunami warning was lifted after waves just 15 centimeters (6 inches) high were recorded in three villages, said the head of Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Dwikorita Karnawati. The centre said there was no tsunami threat to Australia.

He said the quake was also felt in parts of neighbouring Bali island.

Sunday's natural disaster was about 19 miles deep, the USGS said, and caused an electrical blackout so authorities were unable to immediately assess the damage.

No official information about possible casualties was available more than two hours after the quake, which struck in the early evening after sunset.

An EF-3 tornado is capable of destroying parts of homes, lifting cars off the ground and stripping the bark off of trees. He told reporters Wednesday that "nature is very powerful, and we're not on the side of nature".

"The latest data we have is that 19 people are dead at Tanjung Hospital (North Lombok)", Agus Hendra Sanjaya, Mataram search and rescue spokesman, told AFP.

It comes a week after another tremor killed 16 people and injured dozens more on Lombok. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.
