Trump had weighed in on Schuette's behalf - the attorney general had been a loyal supporter of the president's, but during the presidential election Calley had withdrawn his support for Trump in October 2016 following the release of the infamous Access Hollywood tape.

Mr. Balderson's 0.9 percent margin, representing less than 2,000 votes, is slightly greater than the 0.5 percent gap that would trigger an automatic recount, though a losing candidate can still call for one.

It's rare, but not impossible, for election results to be overturned when absentee votes skew hard in one direction. Early vote results heavily favored O'Connor, but Republicans had hoped that a vigorous ground game could make up the difference on Election Day.

Provisional ballots won't be counted until August 17, and the victor of Tuesday's race won't be seated until the House returns to work on September 4.

Democratic challenger Danny O'Connor is critical of both Republicans and Democrats. "A very special and important race!" he said in a second tweet.

Voters on Tuesday were choosing between Balderson, a state senator, and O'Connor, the Franklin County recorder, to complete the term of a Republican who retired in January.

Evan Weese contributed reporting. "Just that this special election is close tells us the 2018 midterms are already a steep hill for the president and his party".

Senate Republicans had hoped to make MI, a state which Trump carried, competitive, but it's fallen down the list of top targets for 2018. Balderson and his Republican allies have backed away from the tax plan in recent weeks, training their fire instead on top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi.

There are dozens of Republican-held seats more favourable to Democrats across the country than Ohio's 12th district, a predominantly rural and suburban seat previously held by the state's moderate Republican Governor John Kasich. "That was not good", the president tweeted. Two vulnerable Senate Democrats, Missouri's Claire McCaskill, and Michigan's Debbie Stabenow are facing challenges in their states.

Mr. Hawley, the Missouri attorney general, advances to face Democratic Sen. He would join Tim Scott of SC as the only black Republican senators if he wins in November.

The primary also is when the next congressman or congresswoman will effectively be chosen in two solidly Democratic U.S. House seats opening due to retirements, and when nominees will be selected for an open battleground district in suburban Detroit. Bernie Sanders and NY congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who catapulted to fame when she defeated the No. 4 House Democrat in a June primary.
