Melania Trump's Slovenian Parents Get US Citizenship

Amalija and Viktor Knavs parents of First Lady Melania Trump arrive with their lawyer Michael Wildes at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building

Melania Trump's parents get US citizenship

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Melania Trump's Slovenian-born parents, took the oath of citizenship in NY on Thursday, their lawyer confirmed.

"This golden experiment, these doors that are in America, remain hinged open to attractive people as they have today", Wildes said after the ceremony.

There has been speculation that the President Donald Trump's in-laws may have benefited from the "chain migration" process that he has claimed endangers Americans and vowed to restrict.

Tweeting on November 2, 2017, he said: "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now!" "This is a very important example of it going right". Stephanie Grisham, a spokeswoman for the first lady, declined to comment on the Knavses' citizenship proceedings or whether the first lady supports her husband's efforts to limit family-based sponsorship.

Michael Moore calls Donald Trump ‘the last president’ in ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ trailer
HuffPost also premiered a trailer for Fahrenheit 11/9 , which drops on September 21. This film will be Moore's second film about the president.

Their lawyer said the couple had met the five-year requirement, but added, "I can't give further comment".

The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law.

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called main migration that allows naturalized United States citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency. While the president never names Saipov, who obtained his green card through the equally maligned diversity lottery, which grants visas to people from countries that have had fewer immigrants, he has been known to detail the attack. Thomas Cioppa, New York district director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, presided over the 20-minute ceremony, Mr Wildes said.

Under US immigration law, Melania's parents would need to have had green cards for at least five years before they could apply for citizenship.

Canada has a MERIT-BASED system, while the United States prioritizes more FAMILY-based immigration.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush around the Jacob K Javits Federal Building.

The Knavses raised Melania, born Melanija, in the rural industrial town of Sevnica while Slovenia was under Communist rule.

She settled in NY in 1996, met the future president two years later and became his third wife in 2005.
