Jet stolen from SeaTac has crashed on Ketron Island in Pierce County

An incident at the Seattle Tacoma International Airport led to a temporary grounding of all flights on Friday night

"Alaska Airlines believes a ground service agent employed by Horizon Air was the individual responsible for flying the Horizon Q400 without clearance from Sea-Tac International Airport around 8 p.m. tonight". Confirming this, the airport said, "No passengers were onboard during the incident and normal operations have resumed at the airfield".

Alaska Airlines acknowledged the incident in a statement, saying "We are aware of an incident involving an unauthorized take-off of a Horizon Air Q400".

Two F-15 jets were scrambled in response to the stolen plane from the Oregon Air National Guard in Portland, Oregon. Witnesses report F-15s chasing plane then saw smoke, and loud boom.

The 29-year-old man, who has not been identified, was suicidal and appeared to have acted alone, the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said on Twitter, adding the employee was probably killed in the crash.

Video showed the Horizon Air Q400 doing large loops and other unsafe manoeuvres as the sun set on the Puget Sound.

The unauthorized pilot was described by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department as a "suicidal male".

FBI Seattle announced on Twitter it would work with local authorities to investigate the accident but said evidence does "not suggest a terrorist threat".

An air traffic controller called the man "Rich", and tried to convince the man to land the airplane.

The sheriff's department tweeted that there were no passengers on plane. Eventually the plane crashed in a remote wooded area of Ketron Island in Puget Sound, leaving behind a fiery pile of debris.
