China says US solar tariffs violate trade rules, lodges WTO complaint

"As the USA measures severely damaged Chinese trade interests, China's choice to resort to the WTO dispute settlement mechanism is a necessary move to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests and multilateral trade rules", a spokesperson with the ministry said.

Of course, tariffs have been a mainstay in Canadian headlines for the past several months, with Trump levying duties on USA imports of Canadian steel and aluminum.

Since the start of the year, the United States has been wielding tariffs against its trading partners worldwide to alter what President Donald Trump calls "unfair trade practices".

At the same time, the European Union lodged its own WTO complaint in June against China's technology policies, which it said violated Beijing's free trade commitments. "I think China chose to bring it up in order to keep up the rhythm of the trade dispute", he said. Only a fraction went to the United States, with India the biggest market.

In their technology dispute, Washington imposed 25 percent duties on $34 billion (3.8 trillion yen) of Chinese goods it said benefit from improper industrial policies. This led to complaints that it undermined the World Trade Organization.
