With his famous father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott spotting from above, Chase maintained his slim advantage as Truex tried to find a way by. It was a two-car breakaway as the rest of the field was more than 11 seconds back.

NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Bill Elliott, who has not competed in a NASCAR national series event in more than six years, will drive for GMS Racing in the Xfinity Series race August 25 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Truex ran second to Elliott for most of the final stage before beginning a steady close. That gave Elliott the lead, which he held until the end.

Midway through the segment, the Big 3 were running in the top 10, but Elliott dominated and beat Busch by 1.3 seconds.

Elliott held off defending race victor, Martin Truex, Jr., in the closing laps. Busch was the early race favorite and led 31 laps before giving up the lead to Elliott. He won at Sonoma, California, the only other true road course on the regular-season schedule, in late June and is the defending Watkins Glen victor. Chase was able to finally capture that elusive first victory in the Cup series.

Elliott led 52 out of 90 laps after starting the race in third.

Paul Menard was dealt a blow to his playoff chances before the race even started when his No. 21 Ford failed inspection Sunday morning and he was sent to the rear of the 37-car field. It's Hamlin's 27th career pole in Cup.

Hamlin traversed the 2.45-mile layout at 125.534 miles per hour in qualifying on Saturday, just ahead of series points leader Kyle Busch.

The 22-year old driver for Hendrick Motorsports in his 99th start in the Monster Energy Series a runner-up eight times in his career, wasn't the bridesmaid this week, as he drove an outstanding race on his way to his first career victory. Joey Logano, who won the Xfinity race on Saturday, qualified sixth, followed by Aric Almirola, AJ Allmendinger, Erik Jones, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Blaney and Michael McDowell.

Elliott's last race was in July 2012 in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Racing announced Saturday afternoon that the NASCAR Hall of Famer would race in the August 26 Xfinity Series race at Road America.
