U-turns leave Malcolm Turnbull on the ropes and facing coup

On Monday Turnbull had declared he had Dutton's "full support".

It's not his fault - he has spent his parliamentary career, all 17 years of it, doing the kinds of jobs that are hard to leverage into popularity, in the traditional, getting-people-to-like-you sense.

Dutton, the minister in charge of the country's intelligence agencies and its notoriously harsh immigration and refugee programs, stood as candidate against him.

Mr Turnbull's risky move may have backfired as it exposes the weakness of his position and the size of the split between the two factions of the Liberal Party.
