Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Fred Waller blamed much of the weekend bloodshed on gang members during a Sunday press conference, describing the shootings as both random and targeted. "What happened this weekend did not happen in every neighborhood in Chicago, but it is unacceptable to happen in any neighborhood in Chicago".
Giuliani cited the murders as an endorsement for former policeman Garry McCarthy for mayor, who Giuliani says can lower the city's homicide rate.
"I think some of our more challenging, communities, it's just imperative that police and the community work together to reduce this gun violence", Superintendent Johnson said. He called on the state legislature to strengthen penalties for those linked to multiple gun crimes.
Facebook removes Alex Jones pages for hate, bullying
Jones and Infowars had a combined total of more than 2.5 million followers on Facebook across their pages. Neither Jones nor a representative for Infowars was available for comment.
Police have said violent crime has declined overall in Chicago.
The demonstration's organizers timed the protest to coincide with rush-hour traffic along the busy thoroughfare on the city's lakefront and then marched to Wrigley Field, where the Chicago Cubs were hosting the San Diego Padres.
"The city isn't on fire", Johnson said.
Chicago ended 2017 with fewer homicides, 650, than 2016, when there were 771. Chicago's murder rate far outpaces New York City's, whose population is about three times as large.

Although investigations were just getting underway, Waller said numerous shootings appeared to be targeted attacks. A 32-year-old man was shot twice in the arm and a 33-year-old man was shot in the hip. At least four people were shot in each of those incidents. A 37-year-old man was shot in the right calf and hospitalized in stable condition, a 21-year-old man was shot in the upper thigh and hospitalized in stable condition and another male victim was shot and is hospitalized. The worst of it took place in a three-hour span starting around midnight Saturday when 30 people were shot, reports the Sun-Times.
Of the wounded who reported an age, the oldest was 62 and the youngest 11, police records show.
Resources at local hospitals were taxed as shooting victims poured in.
The girl suffered a gunshot wound to her face and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No suspects were taken into custody.
