Stephanie Clifford, better known as Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress who said she had an affair with Donald J. Trump before he became president, was arrested at a strip club in Columbus, Ohio, her lawyer said early Thursday.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels was arrested on Wednesday while performing at a strip club in OH, according to her lawyer, who called the arrest a "politically motivated" setup.

Mr Avenatti tweeted that Ms Daniels, real name Stephanie Clifford, had been performing "the same act she has performed across the nation at almost 100 strip clubs".

Avenatti tells NBC News his understanding is that there were several undercover vice officers in the club. "This was a setup and politically motivated". He wrote that she was expected to be charged with a misdemeanor "for allowing 'touching'". However, according to her outspoken lawyer, her performance this evening was interrupted.

An Ohio strip club law prohibits clients from touching a nude or semi-nude dancer, unless the patron is a member of the dancer's immediate family. "It reeks of desperation", his tweet said.

She is scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on Friday.

Avenatti posted on Twitter on Thursday morning that Daniels will plead not guilty to three misdemeanour charges. She is suing Trump and his former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, to void a hush agreement she says she signed during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Just days before the 2016 election, Mr Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 (£98,400) in exchange for her silence.

Through White House officials, Mr Trump has denied the affair, although Mr Cohen has admitted paying Daniels as part of the agreement.
