A half-dozen strains of salmonella bacteria have sickened people starting in the middle of February, with 34 of the 212 sickened people hospitalized. Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

There have been 90 cases reported and 40 people have had to seek medical attention for the infection in 26 states as of July 11, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Epidemiologic, tracebook, and laboratory findings link these outbreaks to contact with live poultry such as chicks and ducklings, which come from multiple hatcheries", the CDC says. The birds can carry the bacteria either on their feathers, on their feet and in their droppings. The illness usually last four to seven days, and most people recover without having to be hospitalized.

-Wash your hands with soap and water after touching live poultry. Wear separate shoes when caring for poultry, and leave them outside. Be sure to teach them how to handle the animals.

If you're really loving your backyard chickens and all those fresh eggs, you might be giving your flock a little bit of extra attention - and some snuggles and kisses. The CDC is reminding feed stores and mail-order hatcheries that sell the animals to take steps to prevent salmonella in flocks.
