Google might launch gaming hardware to accompany 'Yeti' streaming service

Google’s next big thing might be a gaming service to take on PS4, Xbox, and Switch

Both Sony and Xbox already offer subscription services for access to a wide library of titles, though Xbox Game Pass still relies on downloads for offline use, and Sony is looking to replicate that feature with their own PlayStation Now. At the Game Developers Conference in March of this year, Google representatives met with several big video game companies to gauge interest in its streaming platform, which is code-named Yeti, sources said. For one, companies have been trying to take on Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo for years - and nearly all of them have failed. In the recent past, Google has made plays to get into the gaming industry through acquisitions of streaming companies like Twitch.

More interesting, however, is the streaming option that would allow Google to make high-end gaming available to more users without needing to sell them dedicated consoles. But this isn't the first time we've heard Google wants to target gamers with products of its own.

Rally in Scranton to Keep Families Together
Advocacy groups, activists and local residents gathered with signs that called for President Donald Trump's impeachment. Families being separated, children in cages", said Emilia Ramos, a cleaner in the district, fighting tears at the rally.

Google also had a presence at GDC and E3 this year, talking to game developers about its plans.

Kotaku also points to the ongoing issues with video game streaming, specifically the effects of slow internet speed that make it hard to download large chunks of gaming data.

Still codenamed Yeti, one source in the report described the Google project as "Imagine playing The Witcher 3 within a tab on Google Chrome".

Piers Harding-Rolls, Head of Games Research & Lead AR/VR Analyst at IHS Market, is optimistic. Even with three full-fledged studios in operation, Amazon has yet to ship a major game, canceling the multiplayer sports brawler Breakaway previous year. Google would be able to stream games from their servers, allowing them to do all the heavy work (graphics processing for example).

The report also states Google is looking to partner with development studios on future projects, or possibly buy the companies outright. In January 2018, the company hired Phil Harrison, the veteran video game executive who spent long stints at Sony and Microsoft as a top manager on the PlayStation and Xbox. Time will tell if this rumour bears fruit or if this project will meet a similar fate to projects like Google Glass.
