CDC recalls Del Monte vegetable trays

Anyone who has consumed any of the recalled vegetable trays and developed symptoms should seek medical attention.

Cyclosporiasis is caused by a microscopic parasite of humans, called Cyclospora cayetanensis, according to the FDA.

The recalled products were distributed to the following stores: Kwik Trip, Kwik Star, Demond's, Sentry, Potash, Meehan's, Country Market, FoodMax Supermarket, and Peapod.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that more than 200 people have been infected with intestinal parasites from Del Monte pre-packaged vegetable trays, USA Today reports. However, the trays were also sold in IL and in in addition to the four states where illnesses were reported.

The recall on vegetable trays sold at Kwik Trip and other location on June 15 has impacted consumers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Those who were sickened bought the vegetables in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. They have a "Best If Enjoyed By" date of June 17, 2018.

Symptoms from this outbreak were first reported on May 14, and the ages of victims range from 13 to 79 years of age, according to CNN.

The FDA has not identified which of the ingredients it believes to be the cause of this outbreak, and each component of these vegetable trays is under consideration. People infected may also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. "FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week. Without treatment, the infection can last from as little as a few days to more than a month.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled items should not consume them and throw them away immediately.
