An autopsy report revealed 80 plastic bags weighing up to eight kilogram (18 pounds) in the whale's stomach, the department added.

The whale was described as "emaciated" and had struggled to eat because its stomach was so full of plastic.

A veterinary team tried "to help stabilize its illness but finally, the whale died" on Friday afternoon, the post said.

Jatuporn Buruspat, head of the department, said the whale probably thought the floating plastic bags were food.

"This plastic rubbish made the whale sick and unable to hunt for food", the department said.

Pilot whales mainly feed on squid, but are known to eat octopus and small fish when squid are not available, according to the American Cetacean Society, a whale conservation group.

Each year, Thailand puts over one million pounds of garbage into the ocean, making it one of the biggest offenders on earth, along with China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The whale's death comes as dozens of cities and companies worldwide are moving to crack down on plastic pollution by banning the use of non-reusable plastic containers, bags and drinking straws.

It was unclear whether the whale was a short-finned or long-finned pilot whale, although short-finned pilots commonly traverse the warmer waters typical of Southeast Asia.
