The latest update, published by the Treasury on Monday, added the names of three Russian nationals, six others and five companies to a blacklist that has already targeted Russian officials for alleged hacking of the US presidential election campaign, as well as other actions, including interference in Ukraine.
The Treasury said Russia's "malign and destabilizing cyber activities" included the NotPetya attack past year, which spread across Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Mr Munchin claimed the sanctions targeted entities that have "directly contributed to improving Russia's cyber and underwater capabilities" that put at risk "the safety and security of the United States and our allies".
It's not clear whether the United States government believes Embedi and ERPScan were also involved in that project, and the official notice doesn't accuse them of having done so, noting only that they are subsidiaries of Digital Security.

Sessions Moves to ‘BLOCK’ Asylum Seekers from Entering US — ASYLUM CRACKDOWN
But Sessions recently called into question whether such cases merited protection under U.S. asylum laws. Asylum-seekers must also demonstrate that their home government is unwilling or unable to protect them.
"Later on, my university buddy invited me to work for the Digital Security company, which was the place where the best hackers from our city were working, and probably the first Russian company which was focused on what we call penetration tests now".
'The United States is committed to aggressively targeting any entity or individual working at the direction of the FSB whose work threatens the United States and will continue to utilize our sanctions authorities, including those provided under CAATSA, to counter the constantly evolving threats emanating from Russian Federation'.
The sanctions mean that all of the property and interests in property held by the individuals and the businesses will be blocked, and people in the United States will be prohibited from engaging in transactions with them.
The individuals placed on the sanctions list are Divetechnoservices owner Vladimir Kaganskiy, its general director, Aleksandr Tribun, and its program manager, Oleg Chirikov.
The entities sanctioned by the US are Digital Security, and their subsidiaries ERPScan and Embedi, and Kvant Scientific Research Institute (Kvant) and Divetechnoservices.
"One of the designated entities is controlled by and has provided material and technological support to Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), while two others have provided the FSB with material and technological support", the statement said.
Larry Kudlow hospitalized after heart attack, Trump says
Kudlow, an unabashed supporter of free trade, joined the Trump administration earlier this year. It was not immediately known when Kudlow suffered the heart attack or what his condition was.
Neither Divetechnoservice nor the Kvant Institute responded immediately to e-mails seeking comment.
"Today's action also targets the Russian government's underwater capabilities", said the Treasury, adding: "Russia has been active in tracking undersea communication cables, which carry the bulk of the world's telecommunications data".
Embedi has found a lot of vulnerabilities in products from Microsoft, Intel and Cisco among others - but has disclosed them in the same way any other security research company does.
"I woke up and was embraced by such news", he said.
"One of the owners of ERPScan is also a DSEC owner, but companies are not subsidiaries, they are different", Polyakov told BleepingComputer.

Kudlow, who is a wry and upbeat speaker, has adopted some of Trump's hard-line rhetoric while working inside the West Wing. His recovery was a great source of pride for him and for his friends, contributing to his upbeat manner.
