Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement Wednesday, giving President Donald Trump the chance to cement conservative control of the high court.

Beyond the votes in individual cases, the makeup of the court in part determines the kind of cases people push to get in front of the justices.

Kennedy has been the only conservative justice willing to endorse any limits on severe punishments under the Eighth Amendment.

"This ruling is also a moment of profound vindication following months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country", Trump said. He said the seat should be left open for the next president to fill.
