North Korea's Kim lands in Singapore ahead of summit with Trump

US President Donald Trump said Monday he thinks "things can work out very nicely" with North Korea on the eve of his historic summit with Kim Jong Un.

"Thanks PM Lee for spending $20 million of taxpayers money, which can. help a lot of needy families in Singapore to survive", posted one Facebook user.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's US-North Korea summit in Singapore, Mr Pompeo said preliminary talks between senior officials were continuing and moving quite rapidly.

Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits.

The president is set to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on June 12 in Singapore.

The North Korean leader reportedly arrived at Changi Airport in Singapore Sunday afternoon, where he was met by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Monday's meeting appeared aimed at making 11th-hour progress ahead of the summit since Sung Kim's earlier talks did little to narrow a gap between the two sides on the definition of denuclearisation or win agreement on tangible commitments from Pyongyang toward dismantling its nuclear arsenal.

"Prime Minister Lee welcomed Chairman Kim to Singapore". While Kim and his delegation are now staying at the St. Regis Hotel amid heavy security.

USA ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim led the U.S. delegation while Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui was part of North Korea's delegation.

Larry Kudlow, Trump's economic adviser, said Sunday on CNN that Trudeau's criticism had damaged Trump's prestige before the summit - and that's why Trump reacted so strongly. However, others reported that the Air China Boeing 747 took off before the leader's jet did by an hour or two as a security measure to avoid making his mode of transportation known.

He said the USA would be satisfied with nothing less than the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula - with verification the key part of any deal.

The Rodong Sinmun newspaper had a two page colour spread on Kim's departure for a "historic summit" and the Korean Central News Agency declared that the meeting would address denuclearisation, permanent peace on the Peninsula and other matters "required by the changed era". Kim Jong-un needs to tell his people why he's willing to negotiate.

He said that those talks "in fact are moving quite rapidly and will come to a logical conclusion more quickly than anticipated". Word does get around, however, and the prospect of a meeting between Kim and Trump had already been on the public's radar.

Trump acknowledged the difficulty of gleaning much information concerning Kim, who has scant experience on the global stage and about whom foreign intelligence agencies have struggled to gather much beyond basic biographical data.

Nobody is pretending North Korea can ape Singapore but the message to Kim of the hermit kingdom is clear - come in from the cold on the steaming hot humid south Asian island of Singapore.

Ahead of the meeting, Trump has dangled the carrot of a normalisation of diplomatic ties between the former foes and even a White House visit for Kim, which would confirm his arrival on the world stage. North Korea is seeking a security guarantee - possibly including a peace treaty formally ending the Korean War - and the removal of the U.S.'s nuclear umbrella protecting allies South Korea and Japan.

Asked Saturday what the benchmark of success is for the summit, he said, "At a minimum, I do believe, at least we'll have met each other". And even if North Korea agrees to dismantle all of its nuclear weapons, what's to say it won't make more now that it has the formula?

A North Korean cargo plan also flew to Singapore, likely carrying supplies an equipment for the delegation. But that could lead to a situation similar to previous failed agreements where North Korea dragged out its end of the deal for years before reneging.

The top United States and North Korean negotiators had earlier emerged from a last-ditch meeting at the Ritz Carlton with pursed lips, and no sign of whether an attempt to narrow the gap between U.S. and North Korean expectations of what denuclearisation should look like, had worked.
