Sharon Sims launched the nation's first support group for West Nile Virus patients in 2003 one year after MS saw 193 cases of WNV.

Valdosta State University has found several mosquitoes tested in their labs to be positive with West Nile Virus.

In 2017, MS had 63 cases of West Nile. Both reports are roughly one month earlier than the first case of West Nile in 2017, according to ABC News.

The California Department of Public Health/West Nile virus program notified the County of Santa Cruz on Thursday of the summer's first find of a West Nile virus positive dead bird in Santa Cruz County. No vaccine or specific antiviral treatment for West Nile virus exists, and people with weak immune systems, health conditions, and people older than 60 could be at higher risk for severe illness if they contract the virus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In rare severe case, the symptoms are meningitis, encephalitis or death, according to IDPH.

"The DuPage County Health Department monitors West Nile virus (WNV) activity weekly by collecting and testing mosquitoes in 30 traps located throughout the county", public information officer Don Bolger said in an email. Fix or replace screens that have tears or other openings.

That's important as the region deals with the West Nile virus.

Officials advised residents to also inspect their yards for any standing water sources, which can serve as mosquito breeding sites.
