Kate Spade’s husband says she battled demons, death was complete shock

In it, he clarifies some of the reports surrounding her death and speaks candidly about her struggles with anxiety and depression.

The NYPD confirmed to ET on Tuesday that Spade, 55, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment of an apparent suicide, and her body was discovered by an individual that was employed by her.

Spade is survived by her husband and their 13-year-old daughter, Frances Beatrix.

"There was no indication and no warning that she would do this", he said. She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last five years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety.

First daughter Ivanka Trump, a fellow New Yorker with a clothing and accessories line, wrote on Twitter that Spade's death was "a painful reminder that we never truly know another's pain or the burden they carry". On Wednesday, her father Frank Brosnahan spoke with the Kansas City Star to shed light on the designer's battle with mental illness.

"She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives", he says.

Her daughter is only thirteen years old and just lost her mother.

Law enforcement sources told the Associated Press she appeared to have died from a suicide, and she left behind a note.

"The family is disgusted and saddened that at this time of great sorrow, Kate's sister who has been estranged from the entire family for more than 10 years would choose to surface with unsubstantiated comments", the family said in a statement, reported People. "We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already".

"We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how", he insisted.

An unnamed source told Page Six that Kate had been a "major alcoholic", while additional anonymous sources also claimed that Kate appeared to have a drinking problem. While he hasn't seen a note, Andy says he's appalled that a private message to their daughter was "heartlessly shared with the media". We loved creating our businesses together. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break".

"We are grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support the family has received over the last few days", the statement reads.
