Bilbao, one of the culinary capitals of the world, hosted the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurants 2018 unveiling on Tuesday, and American gastronomy was well represented although the US lost the top spot as Eleven Madison Park dropped to fourth place.

Italy's Osteria Francescana took the top spot at the World's 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony on Tuesday, garnering praise for playful use of local ingredients in dishes including Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano.

As feminism spiked early in the year following the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the rise of the #MeToo movement, British chef Clare Smith received the award for the best female chef and gave a speech where she highlighted how "women need to clear the path for the next generation".

El Celler de Can Roca, presided over by three brothers in the Spanish region of Catalonia, nabbed second, and Mirazur, run by an Argentine-Italian on the French riviera, came in third.

"Massimo Bottura may be a big personality with high-profile global projects, but Osteria Francescana remains a small, discreet restaurant in the relatively modest Italian town of Modena", said the award's website.

The only Asian restaurant in the top 10 was Bangkok's "Gaggan", whose owner-chef Gaggan Anand has won praise for his modern spin on his native Indian cuisine.

Spain leads the way with seven restaurants on the list, including three in the top 10 - El Celler de Can Roca (No 2); Mugaritz (No 9) and Asador Etxebarri (No 10).

"Ranking on the 50 Best list is more about the restaurant as a whole being recognized". Six are in the United States, six in Latin America and six in Asia. This award is given to the chef with the most votes from his or her peers. Peru's Gaston Acurio won the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award. El Celler de Can Roca is based in Girona, Spain, while Mirazur in Menton, France.
