Women should have got angrier sooner: Hayek

Hayek published an op-ed past year where she described Weinstein's sexual harassment toward her while making 2002's "Frida".

The issue of equality has been a running theme throughout the Cannes film festival, which is the first to take place since sexual harassment allegations against some major Hollywood players surfaced previous year. More than angrier, because I think we were already angry. "I hope that adding my voice to the chorus of those who are finally speaking out will shed light on why it is so hard, and why so many of us have waited so long", she wrote.

Among the 82 women standing in protest was the actress, producer and director Salma Hayek Pinault, a leading voice in the #MeToo and Times Up movements and among the dozens of women who have accused Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct.

"It is a well-known fact, that if you are a woman of color, people believe in you less, and believe what you say less".

Hayek, 51, who accused Weinstein of threatening to kill her in a candid New York Times essay in December, spoke to Variety's Ramin Setoodeh at the Women In Motion panel at Cannes Film Festival Sunday.

Her accusation came after multiple women had already stepped forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment. The producer issued denials following Hayek and Nyong'o's revelations, while he had not responded to the other women who had shared their stories.

Cannes' leaders sign pledge to improve gender equality
Cannes has come under repeated criticism in recent years over its poor record of selecting female filmmakers. Husson is one of three female filmmakers out of the 21 movies in competition for the Palme d'Or this year.

Over the course of her career, Hayek has seen tangible signs that the conversation around women's equality in film has shifted, saying it was tempting to fall into the "trap" of focusing on what needs to be done without acknowledging how much has changed. She also said that male stars should get less pay as way to even things up with chronically underpaid women.

Hayek said Weinstein's direct responses were only to herself, and the accusations lodged against him by Nyong'o. "It is happening", she said.

"This is a new era for men", Hayek said.

Israel's Netta Barzilai wins 2018 Eurovision Song Contest
Australia, which broadcast the competition without taking part since the 1980s, has been sending contestants since 2015. Eurovision bosses offered SuRie the chance to perform again following the altercation but she declined.

While he was producing the 2002 film "Frida", in which Hayek starred, Weinstein insisted that she add an unscripted sex scene with another woman, complete with full-frontal nudity. "If it's centered around my name, to get investors, then we can use that attention for a raft of female projects". Later, in January and February, his legal and public relations team also later wrote lengthy statements in response to allegations from Rose McGowan and Uma Thuman. "We should have come together, because that's what's made the difference, we should have come together sooner", she said.
