Some of the victims in the crash, which occurred around 10:20 a.m. ET, crawled out of the emergency exit in the back of the bus and an escape hatch on the roof.

One child and one adult were killed on Thursday when a school bus full of students from the high school of new Jersey, collided with a truck and overturned in Western new Jersey, officials said.

According to USA media, 10 people have been taken to the Hackettstown Medical Center, 10 have been taken to St Clare's Hospital and others have been taken to the Morristown Medical Center.

The crash left the twisted wreckage of the school bus lying on the roadside near Mount Olive Township, with its undercarriage and front cab almost completely torn off.

The Paramus school district says the bus was taking students from East Brook Middle School to Waterloo Village, a historic site near the crash scene.

"The bus flew off of the wheels, but it hit the metal thing on the side of the highway", pupil Theo Ancevski said. "A lot of people were screaming and hanging from their seatbelts", he said outside Morristown Medical Centre, where he had been treated for cuts and scrapes.

Mount Olive Mayor Rob Greenbaum described the crash scene as "horrific".

Route 80 is closed westbound at exit 26.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said one teacher and one student had been killed while another 43 had been injured in the crash. Students on the other two buses taking part in the trip were told they had to leave 10 minutes after arriving because of a storm, and only learned of the accident when they arrived back at school.

The National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates accidents involving buses, was gathering information on the crash but was not investigating the collision, the agency said on Twitter. He told HLN Thursday there were possible ejections in the crash.

"My heart just dropped, You hear the name of the school." she said before trailing off.

The cause of Thursday's accident and the role of the Mendez dump truck remains under investigation, and the truck driver has not been identified. Also, the truck was involved in another crash in 2016.
