PGA THE PLAYERS Championship- Third Round

Thomas replaces Johnson as world number one

After eight tour victories in three years - including last year's PGA Championship - and six of them in the last 14 months, Justin Thomas finally displaced Dustin Johnson last night as the world's number one player.

Thomas is the 21st player to be ranked No. 1 since 1986, and he's also the fourth youngest at the age of 25 behind Woods, Spieth and McIlroy, who were all 22 or younger.

Johnson has held the No. 1 spot in the world for 64 consecutive weeks, while Thomas will be No. 1 for the first time.

He signed for a 72 for a share of 17th place on 10-under 278.

Simpson, who tied the course record 63 on Friday despite making double at 17, performed admirably from tee to green for the majority of the week, ranking second in driving accuracy (82%). tied sixth in greens in regulation (76%) and first in strokes-gained putting (9.368).

That slight difference will be enough to slide Thomas into the world's No. 1 spot.

Former Alabama men's golfer Justin Thomas finished tied for 11 overall at 11-under par 277 at this weekend's Players Championship.

"It means a lot, but it's something I want to have for a long time, it's not something I just want to have once", Thomas said Sunday.

Thomas is the reigning PGA Championship victor, and Webb Simpson's victory Sunday gives the USA control of the four majors and The Players for the first time in 17 years.

He also finished 2nd at the Tour Championship to win his first FedEx Cup in 2017.

At Alabama, Thomas was the National Player of the Year in 2012 and a member of the Crimson Tide's national-championship team in 2013.
