The Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, on Monday underwent a successful kidney transplant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

"Both the recipient and the donor are stable and recovering well", Vij added.

He was moved to the operation theatre at 8 am on Monday morning, where a team of eight surgeons from AIIMS and Apollo Hospitals were part of the renal transplantation team led by Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo Hospitals.

The surgery was carried out at the cardio-thoracic centre by a team of 20 personnel, including transplant surgeons and transplant anesthesiologists.The team included former chief of AIIMS renal transplant division Sandeep Guleria, now working with Apollo Hospital, surgeon V K Bansal, nephrologist Sandeep Mahajan and AIIMS Director Randip Guleria.

The minister, who was suffering from a kidney ailment, has been undergoing dialysis for the last one month.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has wished him good health and speedy recovery.

Jaitley could be out of action for about a month following surgery, a finance ministry official said. External affairs minister Swaraj had undergone a similar surgery in December 2016. He had cancelled a scheduled trip to Britain in the second week of April.

Jaitley took oath as the Rajya Sabha Member representing Uttar Pradesh on April 15. In 2005, he had undergone a bypass surgery, too. The surgery was first performed at Max Hospital, but due to complications, he was shifted to AIIMS.

Jaitley had also underwent a heart surgery several years ago.
