Explained: Why parties should be wary of JD(S)

Karnataka state elections throw up unclear verdict

Elections over, and now politics begins

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier said that the elections in the state would not result in a hung assembly, but that is clearly what's happening in Karnataka. "If I were Yeddyurappa, I will not take oath until the hearing at 10.30 am on Friday", he added. "We will let you know what is the plan".

The Congress Party's seats dwindled from 122 in the last election to 40 now, while the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) won 38 seats this time, marginally down from 40 in 2013.

- However, later in the day the BJP's numbers dropped giving it the position of the single largest party, but falling short of a clear majority.

Congress leader from Karnataka, DK Shivkumar told CNN-News 18 that senior party leaders and MLAs will meet at 8pm and decide where to shift the MLAs to prevent defections. However, CPM general secretary, Sitaram Yechury tweeted: "JD (S)-Congress are together, past the majority mark & must be called to form the govt and take the floor test #Karnataka". In the first option, BJP Karnataka president BS Yeddyurappa will be asked to prove his majority and the party will get MLAs from the rival camps to abstain.

Gina Haspel confirmed as CIA director, first woman to lead agency
Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the nomination was not just about Haspel but also about the US grappling with its past mistakes. A 33-year veteran of the CIA , Haspel will be the first woman to lead the agency and is now serving as its acting director .

The possibility of a federal front can also find the support of Telugu Desam Party chief and Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu who has parted ways with BJP and looks ready to do business with the opposition but who will be comfortable with a less prominent profile for Congress. BJP is trying hard to get them.

Responding to MLAs missing from his party, Siddaramaiah has been quoted as saying, "All the Congress MLAs are intact".

Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah turned "emotional" at a meeting of the party's new legislators today while speaking on Congress' defeat in the assembly polls even as senior leaders blamed him for the result, party sources said.

Tense negotiations are likely to form the next government in the state. The JD (S) will have to tie up with the Congress for 2019 elections thus risking its chances of building bridges with the BJP. ECI, in its notification issued on May 11, said that the polling in the constituency of Jayanagar had been adjourned "due to death of a candidate of a national party", whereas the polling in Rajarajeshwari Nagar constituency is scheduled to take place on May 28.

On Tuesday, though Surjewala argued strongly for a post-poll coalition to form government, his words were quite the opposite when the BJP trounced the Congress in Goa (2017) and Meghalaya (2018) Assembly election to form the government. Led by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, the JD (S) quickly accepted the offer and wrote to the Governor staking claim to power.

Addressing the media, Kumaraswamy said,"JD (S) MLAs are being offered Rs 100 crore each". He said that as people have voted for the BJP, they will form the government. "The Congress government in Karnataka is taking advantage of this situation and has resorted to cheap tactics of tapping the telephones of the BJP leaders", she added in the letter.

The BJP emerged as largest party in Karnataka and the BJP leaders celebrated this as victory. There are no smaller political parties that can be enticed to cross over and just two Independents of whom one has signed the support letter submitted to the Governor.
