Last week, the company confirmed that it was cooperating with Florida authorities after a collision involving its Model S resulted in the death of two teenagers.

The 48-year-old died when his Tesla caught fire after he slammed into a crash barrier on the A2 motorway in southern Ticino. The vehicle appeared not to brake before impact, police said.

In a statement on its Facebook page Ticino fire brigade said: 'The violent impact of Lithium-ion batteries could probably have caused a phenomenon called "thermal runaway", i.e. a rapid and unstoppable increase in temperature'. According to the report, the main problem in terms of fire risk for electric vehicles lies in the so-called "thermal runaway". "A system that, on balance, saves lives & reduces injuries should be released". The study notes, however, that this occurs only in extreme conditions.

That Facebook post has since been deleted with a less detailed post published in its place (see below).
