Dixon Police Officer Hailed As Hero, Student Charged In School Shooting Incident

'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

BREAKING: Sauk Valley Media reports Dixon shooter is former student Matt Milby

Dixon Police Chief Steven Howell said the suspect, a 19-year-old former student, "fired several shots near the west gym".

"We heard about five gun shots and we all kinda just froze", Leah Drengenberg, an eyewitness says. Brandon Stehl was inside the gym when he heard the gun go off.

ABC7 reports that Dallas was the resource officer and the alleged gunman was "19-year-old Matt Milby", a former student. "His courageous actions saved a lot of lives". A press release from police says Milby then ran from the school and shot at an officer during a foot chase. This is a story 13 News will continue to follow and bring you any updates as soon as they become available. But this one happened here. Dallas is a member of the Dixon Police Department. Because there were two heroes, and because Dixon School District 170 and law enforcement were prepared to respond, no one died in this school shooting.

"Thank God he don't kill anyone", said Julie Milby, the shooter's mother. But unfortunately, this isn't the first school shooting in the US this yea, and these situations have quickly become every high school community's worst nightmare. This was as per the training they had received on what to do when their school was faced with a shooter. "He didn't let this situation get escalated and it never got escalated so he did a wonderful job and I accommodate him for that, ' Schafer said". When officers arrived at the school, they found classrooms were barricaded with bookshelves and desks, as students and staff have been trained to do in active shooter situations.

There are questions that must still be answered. How was he able to get into the school easily? "Bless the school resource officer, teachers, administration and students in Dixon".

Howell praised the school resource officer, saying he "could not be more proud" of him. Was it fortunate planning, or was it simply good fortune?

No students or staff were injured.

Classes are canceled Thursday at Dixon High School, although Seniors will gather again to practice for their graduation ceremony.
