Apple, Again, Grows Its California Self-driving Fleet, It Has the Second Biggest Fleet (Updated) - macReports

Apple now has second biggest fleet of self-driving test cars in California

Apple may have more self-driving cars than Waymo in California, but Waymo likely has more overall. The company hasn't been allowed to test self-driving cars without a human safety driver behind the wheel just yet.

It's important to note that companies like Waymo and Uber used to have more self-driving cars in California. Tesla, touted for its advanced "Autopilot" mode, has only 39 self-driving cars in the state.

Each participant in this self-driving auto race must have a safety driver in the vehicle during testing.

UPDATE: Apple has the second highest number of self driving cars after GM Cruise, which as 104 vehicles, as of now.

Alongside the new cars, Apple has 83 drivers (compared to GM's frankly ludicrous 407) who need to sit inside every time they move. Waymo, for instance, has hundreds of autonomous vehicles being tested in Arizona.

But before a company can acquire the required permit, it has to test its cars in a controlled setting. The California DMV has began issuing driverless permits in April of this year. The DMV said a second, unnamed company requested the same approval but didn't offer additional details. But building an entire self-driving vehicle fleet from the ground up proved too hard.
