This led them to raise their voice demanding the government's intervention in wage revision.

Protesting against the non-revision of wages, some 55,000 bank employees and officers from across 47 banks of Gujarat will join the nationwide strike by bankers on May 30 and May 31.

For those who are unaware, the UFBU consists of nine banking sector unions, representing bankers all around the country.

The organisations calling for the strike, under the umbrella of UFBU, include All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE), All India Bank Officers' Association (AIBOA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), Indian National Bank Employees Federation (INBEF), Indian National Bank Officers Congress (INBOC), National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW), and National Organisation of Bank Officers (NOBO). However, IBA has offered a meagre 2 per cent rise in the wage bill for the increase in wages.

All India Bank Officers' Confederation Joint General Secretary Ravinder Gupta questioned the rationale for such a low salary increase at a time of rising inflation.

During the negotiations held on May 5, IBA made two unacceptable propositions.

The UFBU has demanded expeditious and early wage revision settlement. "The strike notice has been served to Indian Banks Association (IBA) representing the bank management and the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), New Delhi", CH Venkatachalam, General Secretary, AIBEA, told the news agency.

"When prices go up unabated, can wages be depressed?" The unions had rejected the IBA offer.

In the last 10th Bipartite Wage Settlement that was made effective from November 1, 2012, the IBA had agreed to a hike of 15 per cent over the total wage bill.
