France is urging Russian Federation to join a push for a political solution in Syria after joint U.S., French and British attacks on Syrian chemical weapons sites.

The official added that "while the available information is much greater on the chlorine use, we do have significant information that also points to sarin use" in the attack.

New U.S. sanctions against Russian Federation are coming as soon as Monday to punish the country for its support of the Syrian regime, Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday.

Russian Foreign Ministry official Vladimir Ermakov struck a apparently conciliatory tone on Sunday, saying Washington would want to maintain a dialogue with Moscow about strategic stability after the raids, Russian media reported. "They will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use", Haley said, referring to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"This very easily could happen in the United States if we're not smart, and if we're not conscious of what's happening", Haley said during an interview with "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace.

New push in UN to end Syria's chemical weapons following strikes
Syrian authorities claim that more than 100 missiles were shot down by their air defense system. Bishara says the only way to stop the use of chemical weapons is by bringing an end to the war.

"In the United States administration there are specific people who it is possible to talk with", said Ermakov, head of the ministry's Department for Non-proliferation and Arms Control.

Russia denounced allegations of a gas attack in Douma and said it was staged by Britain to whip up anti-Russian hysteria.

Russia, which is helping Assad fight militants and rebels opposed to his rule, immediately condemned the strikes and called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

A team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is in Syria to investigate the Douma incident and was expected to visit the town. "We know that it is now up to Bashar al-Assad on whether he's going to use chemical weapons again".

"Will this deter Assad from using chemical weapons again?" Russian Federation said on Saturday it would consider supplying S-300 surface to-air missile systems to Syria following the Western strikes, but this was not discussed at the meeting with Assad, agencies reported.

Celebrating his crushing victory over rebels in Douma, Eastern Ghouta, where the suspected chemical attack took place, Assad was said to be in a "good mood" today.

A Kremlin statement said Mr Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani, agreed during a telephone conversation that the air strikes had damaged the chances of achieving a political resolution of the conflict in Syria.

But Haley said the US would not pull its troops out of Syria - despite vows by President Trump to bring the military home - until its goals are accomplished.

"We wanted their friends Iran and Russian Federation to know that we meant business and that they were going to be feeling the pain from this as well", Haley said.

The Pentagon has said the strikes successfully hit the three chemical weapons facilities which were targeted.
